Rawalpindi (Pothwar.com — Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi | August 03, 2026): The spillways of Rawal Dam were opened temporarily after the water level reached the designated limit, allowing excess water to be released under strict supervision. However, the spillways were closed after the dam’s water level reached the prescribed limit of 1,747 feet.

According to the district administration, the spillways were opened at 6:00 am under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner Secretariat. The release operation continued for approximately five and a half hours, after which the spillways were closed once the water level stabilised at the maximum permitted level.

The Islamabad district administration stated that all necessary precautionary measures were taken before opening the spillways to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incident. Relevant departments, including Rescue 1122, police, district administration officials, and other concerned agencies, remained present at the site throughout the operation.

Officials said that strict monitoring was carried out during the opening of the spillways. During the operation, one person was reportedly arrested for attempting to bathe in the water channel despite safety warnings and restrictions imposed by authorities.

The administration has urged citizens to avoid entering water channels and areas near the dam during spillway operations, emphasising that such activities can be extremely dangerous due to sudden changes in water flow.

Authorities continue to monitor the water level at Rawal Dam and have assured that all necessary steps will be taken to manage the situation effectively and ensure public safety.
