Kallar Syedan (Pothohar.com — Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi, October 21, 2026): The price of domestic LPG cylinders, already being sold at around 90 percent above the official rate, has been increased by another Rs1,000 by plant owners, further aggravating the financial difficulties of ordinary households.
Following the latest increase announced on Tuesday, a domestic gas cylinder is now selling for Rs6,100 in the open market, despite its official price being Rs3,296. The substantial difference between the official and market prices has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of government price-control measures.
Despite the involvement of government departments, regulatory authorities and the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) Force, authorities have reportedly failed to curb what consumers describe as unchecked profiteering by LPG plant owners. Critics allege that influential individuals, including some bureaucrats and retired officials, are exploiting the public, while powerful institutions, including the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), have failed to ensure effective relief for consumers.
The continuous rise in essential commodity prices has left families struggling to meet their basic needs. Households are increasingly finding it difficult to manage expenses, including monthly electricity bills ranging from Rs20,000 to Rs30,000, fuel costs, food expenses and medical treatment for sick family members.
Consumers are being forced to make difficult choices between providing for their children, paying utility bills, purchasing fuel and arranging medical care for their loved ones.
Meanwhile, inflation continues to rise despite government measures aimed at providing relief to the public. Consumers complain that essential commodities are rarely available at officially notified prices in local markets. Even in government-established Sahulat Bazaars, official price lists are allegedly set aside while vendors charge prices of their own choosing.
The situation has fuelled growing public frustration, as prices of essential goods continue to rise with little apparent accountability. Citizens are demanding effective enforcement of official price lists, strict action against profiteering, and meaningful intervention by the relevant authorities to provide relief to financially distressed households.
The latest increase in LPG prices has once again highlighted the growing gap between official rates and actual market prices, raising questions about the effectiveness of the existing price-control system and the protection available to ordinary consumers.
