London (Pothwar.com – Mohammad Naseer Raja, July 03, 2026) –The UK government has announced plans to introduce new, limited and secure legal pathways for refugees by the end of this year, allowing universities, businesses and community organisations to sponsor eligible refugees seeking protection in Britain.
According to the Home Office, the new scheme is inspired by Canada’s refugee sponsorship model, under which approved institutions will be able to support applications from refugees wishing to relocate to the UK.
The government said the programme is expected to become a key part of the UK’s future refugee protection system, offering greater capacity than the existing UK Resettlement Scheme.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the new policy is designed to provide protection for genuine refugees while closing loopholes that have previously been exploited.
She added that Britain has a long tradition of offering sanctuary to people fleeing war and persecution, but maintaining public confidence requires an asylum system that is fair, well-managed and free from abuse.
The government also announced plans to reform the application of human rights and modern slavery legislation to discourage unfounded asylum claims. Under the proposed changes, certain foreign nationals convicted of crimes or found to have used fraudulent documents may no longer qualify for protection under modern slavery laws.
Applications for the University Sponsorship Programme are expected to open later this year, with the first arrivals anticipated in 2027. An employment-based refugee sponsorship scheme is also expected to be launched next year.
The government stressed that the number of people admitted through these new legal routes will be limited and that all applicants will undergo rigorous security and eligibility checks before approval.
