Kallar Syedan (Pothwar.com, October 24, 2026, Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi): A major natural gas supply project for several union councils in the Choa Khalsa Qanungo Circle of Tehsil Kallar Syedan remains incomplete even after nine years, despite an estimated cost of Rs470 million and the passage of successive governments.
Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif announced the provision of natural gas to the union councils of Choa Khalsa and Kanoha, along with parts of Samote and Bhallakhar, during his visit to Narh in 2016 while serving as prime minister. Following his disqualification, then Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, nominated by Nawaz Sharif, transferred the project’s estimated cost of Rs470 million to the account of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in 2017. Work on the project began the same year.
During the first phase, the main gas pipeline was laid from Habib Chowk near Gujar Khan through Bewal, Takal, Choa Khalsa, Kanoha, Bank Chowk, Sathwani, Dhamali, Sadda Kamal and Chakyal. Work subsequently began on laying branch lines to residential areas.
However, the project has continued to drag on, with residents still waiting for gas connections nearly a decade after construction began. The project reportedly remained neglected for extended periods during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure, allegedly because it was associated with the PML-N. Subsequent governments also failed to ensure its timely completion, with the scheme often regarded as Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s project rather than a public welfare initiative.
In Union Council Kaniha, more than 90 per cent of the work has reportedly been completed, while most of the work in Choa Khalsa has also been carried out. Despite this progress, the infrastructure has yet to deliver the intended benefits to local residents.
Gas pipes have been lying in various areas for years, while contractors have reportedly failed to return to complete the remaining work. Streets excavated for pipeline installation have been left in poor condition, causing considerable inconvenience to residents. Ironically, people who are still waiting for natural gas have also been deprived of the convenience of using their streets properly.
The prolonged delay has raised serious questions about the implementation of a project funded with public money. Despite the expenditure and years of construction, the promised supply of natural gas remains an unfulfilled dream for many residents of the affected areas.
Federal Parliamentary Secretary Raja Usama Sarwar has been urged to treat the scheme as a public welfare priority and ensure its completion within weeks rather than allowing it to remain pending for months or years.
Residents hope that immediate action will be taken to complete the remaining work and provide functional gas connections to the intended communities. Otherwise, the investment of Rs470 million will fail to achieve its fundamental purpose of providing a basic public utility to the people of Kallar Syedan.
