Kallar Syedan (Pothwar.com — Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi, October 18, 2026): A sharp increase in flour and fine flour prices across Punjab has placed an additional financial burden on low-income families, making one of the country’s most essential food items increasingly unaffordable for vulnerable sections of society.

According to local market reports, flour prices have risen significantly over the past few days, while the cost of naan and roti has also increased. Many people struggling to meet their daily expenses are reportedly being forced to purchase small quantities of flour worth Rs100, Rs150 or Rs200 from local flour mills to manage their household needs.

The price of a 15-kilogram flour bag has reportedly increased by more than Rs450 in recent days and is now selling for between Rs2,400 and Rs2,450 in the open market.

Fine flour, commonly used for making naan and other bakery products, has also witnessed a substantial increase. A bag that was previously available for around Rs10,200 has now crossed the Rs13,000 mark, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the price of a 10-kilogram flour bag has reportedly reached Rs1,600, while a 20-kilogram bag is selling for approximately Rs3,200. Last month, the same bags were available for around Rs1,400 and Rs2,800, respectively.

The continued rise in prices has intensified concerns among consumers, with the report warning that flour prices could increase further if the current situation persists.

Questions Raised Over Wheat Pricing and Government Policies

The report has raised concerns over the gap between the prices paid to local wheat farmers and the current prices of flour in the market. It alleges that middlemen who purchased wheat from farmers at low prices are now benefiting from the sharp increase in market rates.

It has also criticised the silence of ministers, advisers and government officials associated with the new wheat policy, arguing that the authorities should explain the reasons behind the price surge and clarify what measures are being taken to protect consumers.

The report further questions the Punjab government’s claims of rapid development, stating that rising food prices are making daily life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens.

Limited Supply of Subsidised Flour in Kallar Syedan

The situation in Tehsil Kallar Syedan has raised additional concerns because of the limited availability of flour at government-approved prices.

According to the report, approximately 400 bags of subsidised flour, each weighing 10 kilograms, are supplied daily across the tehsil. A total of 11 distribution points have been designated to provide the flour to local residents.

Of these, six distribution points are located in Kallar Syedan city, while one operates in Chauk Pindori. Shah Bagh and Doberan Kallan have two distribution points each.

However, the report states that each distribution point receives an average of only 25 to 30 bags of 10-kilogram flour per day. This limited supply is reportedly insufficient to meet the needs of the local population, leaving many residents struggling to obtain flour at government-controlled prices.

Choa Khalsa and Surrounding Areas Reportedly Left Without a Distribution Point

A major concern highlighted in the report is the absence of a government flour distribution point at Choa Khalsa, the headquarters of the Choa Khalsa revenue circle.

Residents of Choa Khalsa, Kanoha, Manianda and Smot are reportedly unable to obtain flour at government-approved rates through a designated local distribution point.

The report questions why Choa Khalsa has not been included in the distribution network and suggests that local political considerations may have played a role. However, this allegation has not been independently verified.

The reported absence of subsidised flour facilities has caused resentment among residents, who believe that access to essential food supplies should not depend on political affiliations or local influence.

Residents Demand Immediate Action

Local residents have expressed anger and disappointment over the rising cost of flour and the limited availability of subsidised supplies. They have urged elected representatives, political leaders and relevant government departments to take immediate steps to address the situation.

Residents have called for an increase in the daily quota of subsidised flour, the establishment of a distribution point in Choa Khalsa, and improved access for people living in surrounding union councils.

They have also urged political representatives to focus on public service and ensure that vulnerable families can purchase essential food items at affordable prices.

With flour prices continuing to put pressure on household budgets, residents are seeking practical measures to stabilise the market, improve distribution and ensure that government-subsidised flour reaches the communities most in need.

The report calls for urgent intervention by the Punjab government and local administration to address rising flour prices, review the distribution of subsidised supplies and provide relief to struggling families across Kallar Syedan.
