Gujar Khan Traffic Relief Project: Two Underpasses and Modern Service Road Corridor

Gujar Khan (Pothwar.com, 09 October 2026) A major traffic-management project has been launched in Gujjar Khan to address the growing congestion on the GT Road (N-5). Instead of constructing a flyover, the authorities are moving ahead with a new plan featuring two major underpasses and a modern service-road corridor designed to separate through traffic from local city traffic.
The project is aimed at improving traffic flow through the city, reducing congestion at major junctions and providing smoother access to residential and commercial areas.
Construction Underway, Completion Targeted for January 2027
According to the project plan, construction work formally began in 2026, with the authorities setting an estimated completion period of approximately six months.
If construction proceeds without major delays, the project is expected to be completed and opened to traffic by January 2027.
The scheme focuses on two strategically important locations:
- Guliana Mor Underpass
- Technical Training College / Bancham Mor Underpass
These two underpasses are expected to play a central role in reorganising traffic movement along the N-5 corridor.
How the New Traffic System Will Work
The key objective of the project is to create a clear separation between long-distance traffic travelling along the GT Road and local traffic entering or leaving Gujjar Khan city.
Under the proposed arrangement, traffic travelling from Islamabad towards Lahore and Jhelum, as well as traffic moving in the opposite direction, will continue using the main GT Road without being forced to stop at busy city intersections.
At the same time, motorists travelling into Gujjar Khan’s inner areas will be directed through the new underpasses and connected service-road network.
This arrangement is expected to reduce unnecessary interaction between high-speed through traffic and vehicles making local trips.
Guliana Mor Underpass
The Guliana Mor Underpass will be one of the project’s principal structures.
The location is strategically important because traffic entering and leaving surrounding areas frequently intersects with the main N-5 corridor. The underpass is intended to improve connectivity while reducing congestion and delays at the junction.
Once operational, the facility is expected to provide a more organised route for local traffic and help prevent queues from forming on the main GT Road.
Technical Training College / Bancham Mor Underpass
The second major component is the Technical Training College / Bancham Mor Underpass.
This underpass will provide another controlled crossing point for local traffic and is expected to improve movement between the GT Road and the inner parts of Gujjar Khan.
Together, the two underpasses are intended to create a more efficient traffic-distribution system rather than concentrating vehicles at a single flyover or intersection.
Modern Service Road Corridor
A major feature of the new plan is the development of a modern service-road corridor alongside the underpasses.
The service-road system will be important for local motorists, commercial vehicles and residents who need to access businesses, neighbourhoods and other destinations within Gujjar Khan.
Instead of entering the main traffic stream unnecessarily, local vehicles will be able to use the service-road network to reach different parts of the city.
This is expected to improve both traffic safety and journey times, particularly during peak hours.
Why an Underpass System Instead of a Flyover?
The revised approach places greater emphasis on separating traffic at ground level while maintaining uninterrupted movement on the main N-5 route.
A flyover would primarily address the movement of one traffic stream over another. The proposed underpass-and-service-road model, however, is intended to reorganise the wider traffic network by providing separate routes for through and local traffic.
The plan therefore seeks to address not only congestion at individual junctions but also the broader problem of traffic entering and leaving Gujjar Khan.
Expected Benefits for Gujjar Khan
If completed according to schedule, the project could bring several significant improvements to the city’s transport system:
- Reduced congestion on GT Road (N-5)
- Smoother Islamabad–Lahore traffic movement
- Improved connectivity between Gujjar Khan’s inner areas and the main highway
- Reduced delays at major intersections
- Better separation of local and through traffic
- Improved access to commercial areas and neighbourhoods
- Greater road safety through more organised traffic movement
- Reduced pressure on existing junctions during peak hours
- More efficient use of service roads for local traffic
Traffic Movement After Completion
The planned traffic arrangement can broadly be understood as follows:
Islamabad ↔ Gujjar Khan ↔ Jhelum/Lahore
The main N-5 traffic will continue along the primary highway corridor, while vehicles travelling to and from the inner city will use the designated underpasses and service roads.
The resulting network is intended to create a more continuous flow of traffic, with fewer interruptions caused by vehicles crossing, turning or entering local roads directly from the main highway.
Traffic Map and Route Plan
The proposed traffic system can be represented conceptually as:
Main GT Road (N-5)
Islamabad → → → Gujjar Khan → → → Jhelum/Lahore

The exact implementation of individual lanes, turning movements and access points will depend on the final engineering and traffic-management arrangements at the project sites.
Six-Month Construction Target
The authorities have reportedly set an ambitious six-month construction target. With work beginning in 2026, the stated objective is to have the infrastructure ready for traffic by January 2027, provided construction continues without significant technical, administrative, financial or weather-related delays.
The coming months will therefore be important for Gujjar Khan residents and daily commuters, as construction activity may temporarily affect traffic patterns before the permanent system becomes operational.
A Major Change to Gujjar Khan’s Road Network
The project represents a significant change in the way traffic through Gujjar Khan is planned. Rather than relying on a single flyover solution, the proposed system combines two underpasses with a modern service-road corridor to create separate movement channels for highway and local traffic.
If implemented successfully, the scheme could substantially improve traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest transport corridors and provide Gujjar Khan with a more organised road network.
The target is clear: construction during 2026, completion in approximately six months, and opening of the improved traffic system by January 2027.
