Oman Halts Work Permits for Foreign Workers Over 60

مسقط، 26 اگست 2026 (پوٹھوار ڈاٹ کام – محمد نصیر راجہ) —خلیجی سلطنت عمان کی حکومت نے 60 سال سے زائد عمر کے غیر ملکی کارکنوں کے لیے نئے ورک پرمٹ کے اجراء اور موجودہ پرمٹس کی تجدید کا عمل مکمل طور پر روک دیا ہے، اس فیصلے نے چار سال قبل متعارف کرائی گئی پالیسی کو یکسر تبدیل کردیا۔ عرب میڈیا کی رپورٹس کے مطابق گزشتہ چند ہفتوں کے دوران عمان کی کمپنیوں اور مالکان کی جانب سے 60 سال سے زائد عمر کے غیر ملکی ملازمین کے ورک پرمٹ کی تجدید کے لیے جمع کرائی گئی متعدد درخواستوں کو وزاتِ محنت کی جانب سے مسترد کر دیا گیا ہے، حکومتی ذرائع نے بھی تصدیق کی ہے کہ فی الوقت 60 سال سے زائد عمر کے تارکینِ وطن کو نیا ورک پرمٹ جاری نہیں کیا جا رہا۔
بتایا گیا ہے کہ یہ نیا اقدام جنوری 2022ء میں نافذ کی جانے والی اس پالیسی کی منسوخی کو ظاہر کرتا ہے جس کے تحت 60 سال سے زائد عمر کے تجربہ کار اور ماہر غیر ملکی ورکرز کو عمان کے نجی شعبے میں کام جاری رکھنے کی اجازت دی گئی تھی، اس وقت عمانی وزارتِ محنت کا مؤقف تھا کہ کمپنیوں کو ان کی ضرورت کے مطابق اور عمانی شہریوں کے لیے مخصوص نہ ہونے والی ملازمتوں پر تجربہ کار غیر ملکی کارکنان کو برقرار رکھنے کی سہولت ملنی چاہیے۔
تاہم اب اس اچانک تبدیلی اور پرمٹس کی عدم تجدید کی وجہ سے عمان میں طویل عرصے سے مقیم اور 60 سال کی عمر عبور کرنے والے ہزاروں غیر ملکی ورکرز کے روزگار اور رہائشی سٹیٹس یعنی اقامے کے مستقبل پر شدید غیر یقینی کے بادل چھا گئے ہیں۔

According to reports in Arab media, several applications submitted by companies and employers in Oman to renew work permits for foreign employees over the age of 60 have reportedly been rejected by the Ministry of Labour in recent weeks.

Government sources have also confirmed, according to the reports, that new work permits are currently not being issued to expatriate workers aged over 60.

Policy Introduced in 2022 Now Reversed

The latest development represents a reversal of a policy introduced by Oman in January 2022, under which experienced and skilled foreign workers over the age of 60 were allowed to continue working in the country’s private sector.

At the time, Oman’s Ministry of Labour had maintained that companies should be able to retain experienced foreign employees where their skills were required, particularly in jobs that were not reserved for Omani citizens.

The policy had provided an opportunity for experienced expatriate professionals to continue their employment beyond the age of 60, subject to the applicable requirements and approvals.

Uncertainty for Long-Term Expatriate Workers

The reported suspension of work-permit renewals has created considerable uncertainty for foreign workers who have lived and worked in Oman for many years and have now crossed the age of 60.
