Speaking to the media on Sunday after offering condolences over the death of Qazi Zameer Akhtar, maternal uncle of journalist Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi, he said that there was nothing wrong with creating additional provinces or administrative units, and urged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to adopt a broader approach on the issue.<\/h4>\n

Qamar Islam Raja said that if intentions were sincere, the existing system could be improved and made more people-friendly. \u201cThe responsibility of politicians is to remove shortcomings from the system,\u201d he said.<\/h4>\n

Regarding the creation of new provinces, he said the issue should not be viewed through the lens of ethnic or linguistic prejudice. He argued that smaller administrative units could help ensure development in remote and neglected areas. He said Sindh’s language and cultural identity would remain intact even if new administrative units were created.<\/h4>\n

He further observed that a large portion of Sindh’s development budget was spent in Karachi, while areas such as Khairpur did not receive comparable benefits. He said people should be made aware of the potential advantages of smaller administrative units instead of being misled by political rhetoric.<\/h4>\n

Commenting on the situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Raja attributed the current unrest and public frustration to what he described as widespread corruption in successive governments and the lavish lifestyles of members of the legislative assembly.<\/h4>\n

He claimed that the bureaucracy had effectively established a \u201cstate within a state\u201d in Azad Kashmir, while the lifestyles of lawmakers were vastly different from those of millions of ordinary Kashmiris. According to him, public trust in elected representatives had declined, with many people believing that relief in electricity and flour prices had been secured primarily as a result of protests.<\/h4>\n

He said the protesters gathered in Rawalakot were consequently being viewed by sections of the public as their \u201csaviours.\u201d He alleged that the situation had also benefited India and claimed that Kashmiris living in the United Kingdom and United States were financially supporting the Rawalakot sit-in. He said there was no shortage of food or other necessities at the protest site.<\/h4>\n

Speaking about local government elections in Punjab, Qamar Islam Raja said the provincial government had decided to hold local government elections toward the end of the current year and called upon PML-N workers to begin preparations.<\/h4>\n

Responding to another question, he said the style of politics that had prevailed since the previous century was no longer effective in the modern era. He said politicians needed to adapt themselves to new methods and changing political realities.<\/h4>\n

He also noted that substantial increases in oil prices had pushed up petrol and diesel prices, which had adversely affected the prices of everyday commodities. He added that a further increase in electricity tariffs had become unavoidable, saying that governing under the prevailing circumstances was not an easy task and remained a \u201cgame of thorns.\u201d<\/h4>\n
