Muscat (Pothwar.com \u2013 Mohammad Naseer Raja | June 29, 2026)<\/strong> \u2014 In a landmark move aimed at strengthening social protection for expatriate workers, the Sultanate of Oman has announced that foreign employees working in both the public and private sectors will now be covered under a mandatory insurance scheme for sick leave and extraordinary leave. The new policy will officially come into effect on July 20, 2026<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n

According to Gulf News<\/strong>, Oman\u2019s Social Protection Fund has issued a new directive under Decision No. 13\/2026<\/strong>, making participation in the insurance scheme compulsory for all expatriate employees working in private sector establishments, government administrative units, and other public legal entities governed by the country’s Labour Law.<\/h4>\n

The Social Protection Fund noted that a similar insurance system covering sick leave and exceptional leave has been in place for Omani nationals since July 2019<\/strong>. The existing scheme includes all Omani employees in both the public and private sectors, workers employed on temporary or training contracts, as well as retirees. The latest decision expands these benefits to include expatriate workers.<\/h4>\n

Officials said the primary objective of the initiative is to extend social protection to a significant segment of Oman\u2019s workforce and broaden access to insurance benefits. The scheme will be mandatory for all expatriate employees who fall under the provisions of Oman\u2019s Labour Law. However, foreign workers who are not covered by the Labour Law will remain exempt from the new regulations.<\/h4>\n

The expansion of insurance coverage is part of Oman\u2019s broader strategy to strengthen its social security system while improving the welfare and protection of the workforce that supports the country’s economy. Authorities believe the measure will contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive labour market.<\/h4>\n
