London (Pothwar.com, Mohammad Naseer Raja \u2013 May 24, 2025) \u2014Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking\u2014Britain\u2019s oldest purpose-built mosque\u2014hosted a poignant interfaith event to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The gathering honoured the 1.5 million Muslim soldiers who served and died during the Second World War and served as a platform for reflection, unity, and remembrance.<\/h4>\n

A highlight of the event was the presence of Holocaust survivor John Hajdu, 88, who shared his harrowing experiences as a Jewish child in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Emphasising the importance of remembrance, Mr Hajdu stated, \u201cThose who are survivors must take every opportunity to talk about what happened to us, to teach the current generation about what happened, to ask them to pass the message on, and the message is that what happened to us must never be forgotten.\u201d<\/h4>\n

The ceremony also featured a wreath-laying at Woking\u2019s Peace Garden by Lord Khan, paying tribute to the 19 Muslim soldiers from the First World War and eight from the Second World War who are buried there. The event was attended by notable figures including from Choa Khalsa, Kallar Syedan, Imam Hafiz Saeed Hashmi of the Shah Jahan Mosque, the Bishop of Guildford Andrew John Watson, and Rabbi Alex Goldberg, Dean of Religious Life at the University of Surrey.<\/h4>\n

The Shah Jahan Mosque, established in 1889, stands as a symbol of Britain’s rich multicultural heritage. The VE Day commemoration underscored the shared histories and sacrifices of diverse communities, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual respect.
