Kallar Syedan (Pothwar.com, Ikram-ul-Haq Qureshi \u2013 21 January 2025)<\/em> \u2013 Arbab Hussain, a suspect arrested in separate cases of robbery and drug possession, has died in police custody at the Kallar Syedan police station. His death sparked protests from his family, former municipal councillors, traders, and local residents, who staged a sit-in at the main square, blocking the Kallar-Pindi Road and chanting slogans against the police. The demonstration, which began at 5 pm, continued until 9 pm.<\/h4>\n

The deceased’s mother accused the police of demanding a hefty bribe for her son’s release. She claimed that when the family refused, the police allegedly killed her son. She also alleged that the police transferred the body to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Rawalpindi for a post-mortem without informing the family.<\/h4>\n

Protesters, led by family members and former municipal councillors including Malik Muhammad Zubair, Abid Zahidi, and Haji Muhammad Ishaq, demanded the transfer of the Kallar Syedan Station House Officer (SHO). Malik Muhammad Zubair delivered multiple impassioned speeches during the protest.<\/h4>\n

The late Arbab Hussain had a long criminal record, with 22 cases registered against him in various police stations, including Kallar Syedan, Rawat, Mandra, Gujar Khan, Jatli, Garh Maharaja, Muzaffargarh, Kahna Lahore, and Mahmood Kot Muzaffargarh. He was also accused of impersonating a police officer and robbing a man named Tariq Mehmood of two mobile phones and a motorbike. Four days before his death, police reportedly recovered 520 grams of cannabis from his possession. Hussain was on physical remand when he passed away in custody.<\/h4>\n

According to the police report, a guard named Shakeel found the suspect unconscious in the lock-up. Hussain was rushed to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital (THQ) Kallar Syedan, where doctors declared him dead. The police subsequently transferred the body to DHQ Rawalpindi.<\/h4>\n

City Police Officer (CPO) Khalid Hamdani has taken notice of the incident and sought a report from SP Saddar. In a press release, SP Saddar stated that Hussain was arrested on 18 January for a robbery case and placed on a two-day physical remand after a court appearance. The statement further noted that the deceased was a habitual drug user and was found unresponsive in his sleep on Monday morning before passing away at the hospital.<\/h4>\n

After negotiations with SP Saddar, the protesters ended their demonstration at 9 pm, agreeing to visit the CPO\u2019s office in Rawalpindi on Tuesday to discuss the matter further. Malik Muhammad Zubair warned the authorities that if their demands were not met by Tuesday, they would organise an even larger protest<\/h4>\n
