If passed, the new legislation will prohibit marriages between first cousins (children of aunts and uncles) across the country.<\/h4>\n<h4>Under the current UK Marriage Act of 1949, marriages between siblings, a father and his daughter, or a mother and her son are prohibited. The Sexual Offences Act 2003 also criminalizes certain familial relationships, but it does not extend to first cousins.<\/h4>\n<h4>Richard Bolden, the Member of Parliament introducing the bill, cited concerns over increased health risks, highlighting that the rate of birth defects in children born from first cousin marriages is nearly double.
